Judy Payne Bios, Link to Long Resumé, & Irrelevant Factoids
25-word bio: Judy Payne is a happy, funny, angry, sassy, caring, understanding teacher, author, columnist, motivator, speaker, friend, and advocate for women who struggle with weight issues.
50-word bio: Judy Payne is a happy, funny, often wise, caring author, columnist, speaker, teacher, coach, friend, cheerleader, and advocate who lost 100+ pounds 30 years ago and has kept it off and now she is teaching smart women how to use her 4-step approach to successful dieting and permanent weight maintenance.
100-word bio: Judy Payne is a funny, angry, sassy, understanding, often wise, author, columnist, speaker, teacher, friend, cheerleader, and advocate for women who struggle with weight issues in a world where fat prejudice is still largely tolerated. Judy was fat by the age of 4. From age 8 to 29 she was a crazy binger and then a crazy dieter. Then, over 30 years ago she got her head, heart, and hectic life organized and lost 100+ pounds and has kept it off. Now she is teaching other women how to use her 4-step approach to successful weight loss and permanent weight maintenance.
For a ridiculously long resumé go to: About Judy
Irrelevant Factoids:
- I’ve been to all the continents except Antarctica.
- I don’t like using 1/3 cup measuring cups
- I like British comedies on public TV
- In college, a “close friend?” got pregnant by my boyfriend WHILE he and I were going steady.
- I started to think about my saxophone and one thought let to another:
- I chose to play the tenor saxophone in high school band because my hs boyfriend played the drums and the tenor sax players sat right in front of the drum players.
- I hid the book Peyton Place in my saxophone case and carried it back and forth to school
- If I didn’t want to practice my saxophone, I hid it in the apple tree at the end of our long lane as soon as I got off the school bus.
- I sold my saxophone when I graduated from hs for $145 and immediately used the money for a Luther League trip to Miami, FL in 1961. In route, in Tuscaloosa Alabama, I got called names for talking to a black lady on the street by a bunch of white boys driving by in a Dukes-of-Hazard-like car
I have NEVER missed playing the saxophone, but I still remember the boyfriend, some shocking scenes in Peyton Place, and the ugly incident in Alabama.

Humorous/Serious Book of Diet Motivation Helps Women Stick to Any Sensible Weight-Control Plan They Choose Judy’s DietGlue Teaches a 4-Step Process For Permanent Weight ControlAuthor, speaker, columnist Judy Payne is a funny, caring, insightful teacher and advocate for women who struggle with weight issues. Judy was fat by the age of 4. From age 8 to 29 she was a crazy binger and then a crazy dieter. Finally, Judy lost 100+ pounds over 30 years ago and has kept it off and is now teaching other yo-yo dieters how to use her unique, proven 4-step approach to successful weight loss and permanent weight maintenance.
Here is a descriptive review from an Amazon reader:
“One huge advantage I found in this book over the dozens of other diet books I have read is how Judy puts her (our) eating issues in the proper perspective in her (our) lives. Her entire philosophy and the book itself are organized into prioritized areas that are symbolized by 4 shades of gray. She sees our first assignment as finding undiscovered, insightful reasons why we have failed over and over in the past. Secondly, she provides some good (and fun) guidance for getting our big life goals and values in order. Third we don’t get the usual diet “plans”, but rather fun, time-saving, meaningful life-management “processes” that will incorporate our big life goals and values as well as how we happily and healthfully deal with food.
Just when Judy would almost made me cry, she made me giggle or made me angry at how mean I have been to myself and how I have allowed others make me feel rotten about myself.
I am buying several copies as gifts for other women I know will love them.” — Harriet Wise

Book Reviews
Credibility+++
This woman knows what she is talking about! The author has lost over 100 pounds and even more amazingly has kept those pounds off for more than 30 years. Add to that personal experience that she has done extensive research and documented all of it and you have an author with great credibility. She writes in a breezy, easy to read and understanding style that is full of totally usable information… — Harbor Gal
I Will Never Look At Dieting The Same Way Again.
This really was so much more than a book about how to lose weight. It’s really about teaching ourselves to be resilient and resourceful in dealing with life. I’m not someone who has a lot of weight to lose, but I’ve struggled with the same unwelcome extra pounds that have crept on after I turned 40 — and I usually feel like an utter failure about not being able to get them off. Reading this book was like talking to a good friend who’s going through the same struggle – and can commiserate with that same letdown when you get on the scale and it hasn’t budged. The concept of getting clear on your core values and major life goals FIRST really was an “a-ha” moment for me. That number on the scale is just that – a number – and it has nothing to do with my self-worth and value as a person… and we women need to stop looking at it that way. Maintaining a sensible weight is really about being healthy, strong, and confident, and feeling in control of our lives. I know this book can help any woman who has a little (or a lot) of weight to lose, because Judy understands that although calories count, the emotional reasons behind our eating count even more. — Erin Lyndsey
Judy Gives Great, Practical Advice For Finding Control In Your Relationship …
I really found this book helpful. Judy gives great, practical advice for finding control in your relationship to food. Her suggestions can be used with any weight loss program and will help you get back on track with weight loss and exercise.
After reading the book, I bought the audio version of her earlier book (The Smart Cookie Approach to Dieting) to listen to as additional reinforcement… — WestchesterLB
I Would Have Named This Book “The How To Live A Happy, Healthy, Balanced, Productive, Thinner Life– Guidebook.”
One huge advantage I found in this book over the dozens of other diet books I have read is how Judy puts her (our) eating issues in the proper perspective in her (our) lives. Her entire philosophy and the book itself are organized into prioritized areas that are symbolized by 4 shades of gray. She sees our first assignment as finding previously undiscovered, insightful reasons why we have failed over and over in the past.
Just when Judy would almost made me cry, she made me giggle or made me angry at how mean I have been to myself and how I have allowed others make me feel rotten about myself… — Harriet Wise
This book is so “meaty”. No fluff. Lots of soulful and useful information and great references.
One aspect I like best about this book is the lack of all the filler junk that is found in most diet books. Most chronic dieters have scores of diet recipe books already. We don’t need or want more recipes or silly, trite tips. This book is about recognizing our values and goals in life, and honoring our personal integrity, and joy, and pain. It’s about finally getting your whole life-management act together with weight control management as just a small doable part of it. — Ciara
The Problem Eaters’ Survivor Handbook
Judy is a “survivor.” She challenged me to create my own “life plan for sensible eating.” I admire her resilience and determination and her success in learning to love herself. I refuse to diet anymore – I want to establish a plan that will work for me. This book makes so much sense! — Kitty Anderson
I love how this book reflects my own struggles with food
I love how this book reflects my own struggles with food and living life. Judy really gets it! I like how the young Judy and the older, wiser Judy show how we can all change and grow even when things are difficult. Her plan to deal with food and the problems many of us have with it is clear and easy to follow. She also knows that everyone has to work on his or her own plan to be successful in dealing with a fat problem. A good read for people who are always dieting but never solving the problem. — Rochelle Lundeen

Payneism’s
(Sound Bites Of Diet Wisdom For Sidebars Or Conversation Starters)
- Contrary to popular belief, Enquirer magazine is not a medical journal.
- Fat is painful.
- If you have a problem with weight control, a diet is like using an aspirin for a brain tumor.
- Perhaps food is partly your demon‑‑partly your demon chaser.
- The actual act of eating can be a buffer zone between you and the pain of life.
- I became my own shrink by letting the fun, childlike Judy within me and the boring, mature Judy within me get acquainted and become friends and co‑workers.
- I am amazed when people are surprised when a chubby person regains. Eighty-to 95% of dieters WILL regain their loss.
- Diets only get you to the starting line, not to the finish line.
- I am a “during”‑‑not a” before” or “after”.
- I am more concerned with feeling in control of my life than in being a certain weight.
- If I control the problems within my power‑‑it gives me the strength and confidence to cope with the stresses and problems in my life I cannot control.
- Restrictive diets are a stop gap effort until we deal with our problem of interacting wisely with everyday people food.
- If we have a problem with food BEFORE a diet, we will have a problem with food AFTER the diet.
- We don’t need to learn how NOT to eat, we need to learn how TO eat.
- Restrictive diets are an abdication of our right to make choices. Restrictive diets are a vacation from making choices.
- Sensible dieting which incorporates making decisions within a structure can be good basic training for long‑term weight maintenance.
- We are not going to lapse into a coma if we miss lunch.
- With one chocolate brownie, I can nurture and abuse myself all in the same bite.
- When you feel a fat attack coming on, remember how awful it is to feel “stuffed.”
- Dieting simply puts your symptom, fat, in remission not your problem.
- We crave organization. When our organization falls apart so does our diet.
- The size of a man’s income or the size of a woman’s rear end are both shallow, silly ways of judging a person’s value, but our society has this superficial system down to a science.
- Round people should at least stop being prejudiced against themselves.
- Diet programs and recipes are tiny ingredients in weight control.
- If all the diet recipe cards on the planet were placed end to end they would circle the globe many times.
- Every year we have more diet books, hints, tips, recipes, and diet products, but Americans are getting fatter every year.
- When you feel a fat attack coming on, put on tight pants.
- Stop ‑‑‑‑ swallowing foolish, easy answers. Look ‑‑‑‑ within. Listen‑‑to the good advice from experts.
- Failing to commit yourself to some sort of structure AFTER a successful diet is like setting a new born baby (after 9 months in a very controlled environment) out into a snow bank and saying ‘”OK honey, you’re on your own.
- The hideous thing about fat is what it does to human potential.”
